Situated in the greater Warren/Youngstown area, the Affiliate serves an area of the Rust Belt where jobs have been declining steadily since the 1970s as major manufacturing plants shut down.
Launching with 13 host congregations throughout the area and a day center at Girard Methodist Church, the Affiliate's director is Patty DiGiacobbe, and its case manager is Melanie Timlin. The first host church was Howland Community Church, welcoming three families the first week. Guests included two mothers, each with grade school children, and a couple with a seven-week-old infant. One family became homeless when an unpaid traffic ticket spiraled into a suspended license, loss of transportation, and the threat of jail. The very first family, a mom with a nine year old, had been staying at the Mahoning Valley Mission in Youngstown, and recommended the second mom with a son, whom she met at the Mission, because of the hospitality she experienced at Family Promise.
