Affiliates across the country helped mark the 20th Anniversary of the founding of Family Promise during Family Promise Week, September 14 through 20, 2008. The week was dedicated to all of the congregations and volunteers nationwide in thanks for the gifts they compassionately offer families in need every day.
Our congregations and volunteers are an invaluable resource to families in need, helping Family Promise connect them with services and support, providing everything from immediate shelter and hospitality to child care and career coaching. Volunteers are an integral part of every one of our programs, from advocating for public policies that will end homelessness to mentoring at-risk families one-on-one. And with their help, 80% of our guest families have moved into permanent housing, into a real home.
Our Affiliates took part in various activities to mark Family Promise Week. Some hosted open houses and fundraisers for their communities, and many host and support congregations planned special worship services and sermons to celebrate their involvement in Family Promise. And staff and volunteers at Affiliates across the country and at the national headquarters held a “moment of observance” to honor guest families and thank all the people who reach out to help them:
In honor of all our families who strive to build a better future,
In gratitude for all those who give of themselves to help a neighbor,
In thanksgiving for all the compassionate spirit that unites us all,
Celebrate with us!
At a time when one in six American children is living below the poverty line, Family Promise Week also served to raise awareness of the vital need for ongoing support for homeless and low-income families. Our Affiliates nationwide are proof that neighbors and communities can come together to make a real difference for our families, and so many of them need our support now more than ever.
