How does policy affect the families we serve?
Every year, Family Promise Affiliates provide temporary housing, meals, and countless other services to thousands of children and parents in emergency situations. But for families to rise above cyclical poverty, further action is required to overcome systemic issues like lack of affordable housing and jobs that don’t pay a living wage. Family Promise is committed to addressing programs and policies that impact low-income families daily.
Voices Uniting mobilizes and supports Family Promise clergy, volunteers, and former guests as advocates for public policies that alleviate poverty and promote economic stability of low-income families. Through this program, collectively raising our voices in the public policy arena, we create substantial and lasting changes that will affect the lives of millions of families in need.
We helped support the passage of the HEARTH Act and the National Housing Trust Fund, two pieces of legislation that provide smart solutions to many of the challenges of homelessness. And we are working to Make Homeless Families Count by changing HUD’s definition of homelessness to include families living “doubled up” with friends or family as well as those temporarily in motels to more accurately reflect the scope of the issue nationwide.
