Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation Provides Funds to Western Affiliates

Family Promise is pleased to announce that the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation has chosen seven Family Promise Affiliates to receive nearly $12,500 each to assist them in prevention and rapid re-housing efforts for the families they serve.  The Foundation is the charitable entity of the Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis International, which comprises member groups in the states of California, Nevada, and Hawaii.

The seven Affiliates to receive the funds are:

  • Family Promise of Hawaii
  • Family Promise of Las Vegas
  • Family Promise of the South Bay
  • Family Promise of Sacramento
  • Family Promise of Greater Modesto
  • Family Promise of Orange County
  • Family Promise of Santa Clarita

“Our Foundation’s board has determined our Hope 4 Kids program, which provides grants to Kiwanis clubs to assist  families that are living in shelters or on the streets, could be better administered by a nonprofit whose mission is focused  on homelessness,” said Jennifer Chaves, Executive Director of the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation.  “As the core of the program is to prevent children from becoming homeless, Family Promise, with Affiliates located throughout our three-state district and an emphasis on helping families secure permanent housing, was the clear choice.  We are pleased to collaborate with Family Promise to provide housing assistance to children and their families throughout our district.”

The grants are specifically aimed at families with children in the Affiliates’ programs and families who are imminently at risk of becoming homeless.  The funds can be used to pay past due utility bills or provide security deposits for graduating families who are moving into new homes, as well as for rescuing families who are living on the street by paying for a stay in a hotel while waiting for space in the Affiliate’s program.  The Affiliate is then able to start critically needed case management immediately, minimizing the time the family will have to spend in shelter.

Terry Lindemann, Executive Director of Family Promise of Las Vegas, is thrilled with the donation.  “The funding we received from The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation will make it possible for our Affiliate to assist 12 or more families that could not qualify for community rapid rehousing dollars because they were not scored in the chronically homeless category.  This financial gift is like having a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow and will help so many deserving families receive keys to their future”.

This support for homelessness prevention is integral to Family Promise’s holistic approach, recognizing that we can use our unique model of community engagement in stopping families from becoming homeless in the first place.
