Gulf Coast Affiliates Persevere Through Hurricane Harvey
Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas Gulf Coast last Friday, dropping more than 50 inches of rain and buffeting Houston and the surrounding area with winds topping 130 mph. The storm has officially been blamed for 46 deaths, with the total sure to rise, and nearly 35,000 people have been driven from their homes to seek shelter.
Our Houston area Affiliates have been hit hard throughout the week. Family Promise of Lake Houston, Fort Bend Family Promise, Family Promise of Clear Creek, Family Promise of Montgomery County, and Family Promise of Bryan-College Station all are feeling the effects of the historic storm.
The National office is in close contact with directors and boards on a daily basis. Most importantly, all guest families and Affiliate staff are safe and accounted for. Depending upon water levels, storm damage, and access to power, some Affiliates are able to house their families in congregations, others at their Day Centers, and the remainder are being put up in hotels.
The damage to the entire Gulf Coast is extensive. We won’t be able to measure its true magnitude for days and weeks. The same is true for our Affiliates. But we know the next few months will be exceedingly difficult for our Family Promise community in the Houston area.
We are fielding many requests on how best to help our Gulf Coast Affiliates. Several organizations have already reached out to Family Promise and pledged funds to help with the recovery. Many individuals have inquired, as well.
If you are looking for a way to make a difference for our Affiliates and the families they continue to serve as the region recovers, you can go directly to their websites and make an online donation:
Family Promise of Bryan-College Station, although also affected by Harvey, was spared the worst of its effects and has requested that donations be directed to their sister Affiliates in greater need.
The national office is also collecting funds to disperse across the Affiliates as needed. You may send a check to:

If you prefer to donate online to National, you may do so here. Please accompany your donation with an email to firstname.lastname@example.org identifying if the donation you made is designated specifically for Harvey relief.
Our Houston area Affiliates and their neighbors along the Gulf Coast will recover from this unprecedented disaster, but it will take much time and great effort. We stand with them throughout, ready to lend all the support necessary to return their programs to full capacity so that they may continue helping families reclaim their independence.
