Family Promise and Clayton Expand Partnership to Prevent Homelessness for Families in Need

April 16, 2024

SUMMIT, NJ — Family Promise, the nation’s leading nonprofit addressing the crisis of family homelessness, announces the extension of its partnership with Clayton, a leading national builder of single-family attainable housing, to help more families at risk of homelessness avoid the trauma of losing their homes.

A Future Begins at Home, the program that arose from the partnership collaboration, focuses on helping families who face homelessness remain in their homes and quickly regain stability. In 2023, the program assisted more than 4,100 families, including 8,000 children, with housing needs to avoid experiencing homelessness. Importantly, 84 percent of families who participated in A Future Begins at Home in 2023 achieved long-term stable housing. Since its inception in 2019, A Future Begins at Home catalyzed more than $12 million in additional funding resulting in more than 25,000 families served.

“This partnership serves as an extension of Clayton’s values,” said Susan Brown, director of philanthropy at Clayton. “We are grateful to work with Family Promise to prevent family homelessness and help more families and children achieve safe and stable housing across the country.”

This year, a generous $1.3 million donation from Clayton will ensure a record number of families in crisis have the support they need to remain together, housed, and working toward independence. Grants will be distributed throughout the Family Promise network, offering families the resources and tools to avoid homelessness and begin working toward lasting independence. Today, approximately 85 percent of the Family Promise network offers homelessness prevention programming, a number that has doubled since 2019.

“One of the most effective ways to address homelessness is through prevention,” said Family Promise CEO Cheryl Schuch. “If a family at risk of homelessness can remain in their home, children are spared additional stress and trauma, and parents can focus on regaining stability. Our expanded national partnership with Clayton allows us to serve even more families and make sure no child is ever without a place to call home.”

On top of Clayton’s generous financial support, the company donated 16 homes to the Family Promise network since 2019 and plans to donate an additional two homes in 2024. These homes, which are used primarily as transitional housing for families working with Family Promise Affiliates, enable families to stay together, receive case management and other support services, and regain stability as they work to find a new home.
