The Rev. Dr. William Barber II will bring his call for a national “moral revival” to the Family Promise National Conference in San Antonio, TX, April 11-13, 2019, where he will serve as keynote speaker.
Rev. Barber is one of the most well-known social justice advocates and engaging speakers of our times. Civil rights activist, orator, preacher, and author, Rev. Barber’s passion and commitment embody the revival of the Poor People’s Campaign, the last movement led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
He is the architect of the Forward Together Moral Monday Movement, and served as president of the North Carolina NAACP, the largest state conference in the South, from 2006 – 2017 and currently sits on the National NAACP Board of Directors. A former Mel King Fellow at MIT, he is currently Visiting Professor of Public Theology and Activism at Union Theological Seminary and is a Senior Fellow at Auburn Seminary. Rev. Dr. Barber is regularly featured in media outlets such as MSNBC, CNN, New York Times, Washington Post, and The Nation Magazine, among others. He is the 2015 recipient of the Puffin Award and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Award.
“His work to combat poverty, call out inequality, and champion the needs of the most vulnerable fits so well with Family Promise’s mission. We need his kind of community-inspired activism to empower families and change the trajectory for children in America,” said Family Promise CEO Claas Ehlers. “Family Promise is committed to serving all people, of all religious, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds. We have much to share with Rev. Barber and much to learn, and we look forward to welcoming him into our community at our 2019 National Conference.”
Rev. Barber is a preacher, he says, and his call to “Pay people what they deserve. Share your food with the hungry. Do this and then your nation shall be called a repairer of the breach” stands as a challenge for our country to turn its attention to those who are disenfranchised, including those experiencing homelessness.
