To celebrate the start of the new year and the end of a difficult 2021, The Guardian picked out the most inspirational, moving, and memorable photos they featured over the last 12 months.
The compilation showcased the highs and lows of an unpredictable year including a photo essay created by Rachel Bujalski in partnership with Family Promise. The piece depicts what life has been like for families during the COVID-19 pandemic, shown through the lens of two California families served by Family Promise of Orange County and Family Promise of the South Bay.
Two single mothers, Cherokeena and Priscilla, allowed the camera into their lives to reveal the reality so many women face as they navigate securing a job, finding housing, and raising children during the pandemic. With the help of Family Promise, they each worked toward stability and independence. Their stories represent the situations families across the country face whether living in their car, staying doubled up with friends, or staying in shelter.
