More Than a Moment: Marcus and Elena

April 14, 2026

Marcus and Elena had built their lives around hard work and their two young children. Elena chose a career in early childhood education because she believed deeply in how stability shapes a child’s future. At home, they tried to create that same steady rhythm – dinner together, holiday traditions, bedtime routines, small moments that make children feel safe.

Then Marcus lost his job. What began as one setback quickly became many. Savings disappeared, bills piled up, and soon they were living apart. Elena and their two young children stayed with relatives, while Marcus moved in with his brother. They told themselves it was temporary, but days turned into weeks and then months. Every night after a good night phone call to dad, Elena tucked the kids into sofas-turned-into-beds, worried about how this disruption would impact her family in the long run.

When they entered Family Promise’s shelter program, they were finally under one roof again. The shelter wasn’t their home, but they could eat dinner together once again, tuck their children in at night, and wake up as a family. That mattered. With guidance and support, Marcus found work with a local landscaping company, while Elena continued her work in early childhood education. Their paychecks reflected their determination, but stability still felt just out of reach.

Nearly all of their income went to childcare, leaving little room to save for a home of their own. They were doing everything they could, yet the math simply didn’t work.

Then Family Promise offered another layer of support: a community daycare program for parents rebuilding their lives. With free, short-term childcare, Marcus and Elena no longer had to choose between paying a sitter and setting money aside for rent. For the first time since the crisis began, their effort started to build toward something lasting.

Later, when the center needed a new director, Elena’s journey came full circle. Drawing on her professional background and lived experience, she was hired to lead the program, helping parents protect the same sense of stability she had fought to restore for her own family.

For Marcus and Elena, childcare wasn’t just assistance. It was the moment their family could move forward together. Rebuilding after homelessness takes more than a moment – it takes opportunity, partnership, and the chance to protect what matters most.
