More Than a Moment: Tanya

April 21, 2026

Life with four kids is busy, but Tanya had built a system that worked. As a working mom, she kept everyone moving: four different schools, sports practices, homework, dinner on the table. Calendars were color-coded. Bills were tracked down to the dollar. It wasn’t easy, but she handled it with discipline and determination because her children were counting on her.

Then her apartment building was sold, and her rent increased. The careful balance she had maintained began to unravel. Expenses quickly outpaced what little she had saved, and before long, she couldn’t keep up. The thought of telling her children they might have to move was something she tried not to dwell on, especially since she had no idea where else they’d go.

That’s when she turned to Family Promise.

Tanya was determined to stay in her apartment. With guidance and budgeting support, she took a hard look at her finances and created a plan to stabilize her household. Even with careful planning, though, things still felt fragile. She was constantly calculating which bills could wait, skipping small extras and stretching groceries so her kids wouldn’t have to miss out on things like school field trips or club fees, hoping nothing unexpected would tip the balance.

Through Family Promise, Tanya accessed temporary rental assistance that allowed her to remain in her home. The short-term support bridged the gap at a critical moment, protecting her children’s schooling, their daily routines, and the stability she had worked so hard to build.

Family Promise also provided career support to help Tanya secure a higher-paying position that better matched her skills and experience. She moved from receptionist to executive assistant, a role she was ready for once she had the space and encouragement to reach for it. The increased income didn’t change who she was; it gave her the margin she needed to stay ahead.

Next fall, her oldest will start college, a milestone that once felt out of reach.

For her family, rental assistance was more than help with rent. It was the moment that protected the life she had built – proof that rebuilding takes more than a moment.
