SUMMIT, New Jersey, May 23, 2023 – Family Promise and Help Us Move In (HUMI) are excited to announce the next stage of their partnership that first began in 2017. Eight Family Promise Affiliates have been selected to receive HUMI grants to support their work in homelessness prevention and stabilization.
HUMI is a nonprofit “on a mission helping children to escape homelessness by engaging communities in sustainable solutions.” The goal of the HUMI grant is to develop a sustainable prevention and housing program in each community that leverages local support for programs.
“In 2000, we successfully started Help Us Move In at First United Methodist Church of Olympia, Washington, and wanted to expand our program,” said Burt Sarver, HUMI Chairman of the Board. “Since joining with Family Promise, our program has grown exponentially. For the past six years, our partnership has helped six families per day go from homeless to housed.”
As of March 2023, 90 Family Promise Affiliates have received HUMI grants, and the partnership has raised more than $11 million to fund Family Promise programs. These grants have enabled Family Promise Affiliates to serve 12,221 families, including 25,303 children.
HUMI Executive Director Sarah Scherer said, “Help Us Move In has granted 1.2 million dollars to Family Promise Affiliates that has generated over 11 million dollars with our matching model and the amazing support of communities.”
“We are grateful for the ongoing partnership with HUMI. With this targeted support, our Affiliates are better equipped to serve the expanding need in their communities,” said Family Promise South Regional Director Caroline Lamar. “HUMI funding enables Affiliates across the Family Promise network to create new community connections and additional funding opportunities which can have a long-term impact and lead to more families and children served.”

About Help Us Move In
Help Us Move In (HUMI) began in Olympia, Washington in 2000 and expanded in the last six years, awarding the Homeless No More Matching Grant to over 100 national locations. HUMI provides a 2-year cycle grant that will match dollar for dollar funds raised within the community and assists the grantee with set up of the program, fundraising, reporting and accounting requirements. The goal of the matching grant is to create a foundation of community support for a sustainable program whereby families with children experiencing a housing crisis can receive case management and assistance with eviction prevention, utilities and move-in costs out of homelessness. Help Us Move In grant programs has helped 32,000 children and their families with housing stability.
